Week 12 - 2nd Sunny Week in a row!

The big buzz here in Luxembourg this week was the weather.  It was sunny and warm all week until Saturday.  Two weeks of warm weather is totally unheard of this time of year.  So we're counting our blessings and enjoying the warm weather!

With the drier weather I started running this week.  It is still pretty chilly at 6:00 am, so I wear gloves and ear warmers.  I basically run out in the farmers fields on the roads they've paved.  The only thing that makes me nervous is running past the farmer's homes.  They usually have signs with German Shepards that say keep out!  Based on Spencer's experience with the German Shepards I really don't want to run into one.  I passed a lady with a huge dog and she stopped and held it tight.  It wasn't wagging it's tail so I thought I was toast.  But she held it back and I kept running.

On Monday for family night we bought an Apple Extreme airport.  It has made our Internet much more reliable.  I'm amazed at how well Apple's stuff works.  Super easy to setup and it just works.  We then went to a bakery called Oberweiss.  It looks more like a jewelry shop than a bakery.  It is a little more expensive than the other bakeries, but each of their treats are works of art.  The kids all chose their treat and they put them in a nice box.  While they were putting them in the box two of the treats touched.  I guess they are totally perfectionists so they took both treats out and replaced them with new ones from the counter.  I think the employees make mistakes on purpose so they can keep the mistakes!

One of the biggest things that happened this week is that Jacob learned how to make crepes.  That is our new favorite breakfast.  We love them with jam, Knutella, bananas, and powdered sugar.  If any of you visit us here we'll make them for sure!

On Tuesday Sam and I went out to lunch with Bob Kneip.  It was at a private "food"club where he is a member.  It was super nice and everyone knew him.  The ambassador to Switzerland walked by and obviously knew Bob.  It was my first experience with Beef Tartar.  Basically it was a pound of really nice spicy, but raw hamburger.  As long as I didn't think about it too much it was good!  I think Kim and the kids literally would have died.

Jake started on the local Kehlen football club this week.  They have 3 really nice fields here and he should have a good time.  They mostly speak Luxembourgish, but the trainer speaks Portuguese and the all of the kids also speak French.

It wasn't a good week for Kim and the car this week.  A parking ticket and a scratch from a wall didn't put me in a great mood, but oh well.

The kids really ventured out on the bikes this week.  Kehlen has tons of trails and should provide a lot of great mountain biking and exploring this spring and into the summer.

Kim is trying to figure out a problem she has with itching.  She went off dairy for 4 weeks and is now going to try going gluten free.  That is really hard here in Luxembourg with all of the good bread.

This weekend we tried playing soccer, but no one from the ward showed up.   We rode the bus into town, which was the first time for the kids riding into to town from Kehlen.   I played for an hour and half with the Portuguese and Nepalese guys, but then left to meet Kim.  She went to a relief society party at the church.

We went home, showered and then picked Kim up after a couple hours and headed to the Nurburgring.  It is a world famous race track in Germany that is only 1 1/2 hours away from here.  They were having a race where the racers would try to get the same time as their previous lap.  We saw a variety of cars from klunkers to really expensive Porsches and Audis.  The Porsches were the most impressive.  They were significantly quieter and faster.  Meaning, the wind noise they would make was waaaaaay less.  We saw them on the downhill and turn at kilometer 17.  We'd love to go back and watch a real race there.  They would go fast to the point where it made you nervous watching some of them.  Pretty cool we are so close.

From there we drove to Cologne (Koln) and saw the Dom of Cologne.  It is the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe.  It was huge and very impressive.  The outside is pretty dark from the sandstone taking on the pollution of the city.  Probably the thing that made the most impression on the kids were the pictures in the souvenir shops of the city totally bombed out during WWII.  The cathedral was literally the only thing left standing and it had been hit 14 times by allied bombs.  The kids will definitely know more about WWII than I ever knew.  If you want a good movie to watch, rent the Book Thief.  Living here where only 30 of 3000 Jews survived the holocaust is a vivid reminder at how horrible the war was and what a huge sacrifice took place in these countries.

I was pretty proud of the kids to try Brats in Germany.  I really like eating traditional food in the places that I travel, so it was fun to see the kids eating Brats in Germany and hey, they actually liked them!

On the way home we drove on the Autobahn and went about 160 km/hour which is about 100 mph.  People were passing us like we were standing still.  You have to be really careful that you don't stay in the left lane very long.  People in Utah should take note as that is my biggest pet peeve.  I love it in Utah when everyone is in the fast lane and the fastest way down the freeway is down the slow lane!  ;)

Jake had to go early to Church today as he is the new deacon's quorum president.  The church here met a huge milestone.  About a year ago they applied to be recognized as an official religion.  It was finally granted to that will pave the way to buy some land and have a building.  We learned this week that the Luxembourg state pays the salaries and upkeep for all of the Catholic churches.  I'm not sure when, but that is going to be ending soon.  I guess they changed in France and the joke is that you had better bring a coat to a wedding in France because the church can't afford to heat the buildings!

This week should be a mix of sun and rain, but on Thursday we are going to get into the 70s!  Should be nice!

Here are the pictures and videos from this week!

Miss you all!
