Week 16 - Jacob's Perspective

1st day - Jacob's Perspective

On our first day of our cruise we went to Marseilles, France. At Marseilles the first thing that we noticed were the tiny streets. We thought that a car could never drive on these streets. A couple blocks down we see a car that was parked. It blocked the WHOLE entire road!

The first church that we saw was a basilica. I forgot the name but here's a picture.

On the inside it was HUGE! The coolest part was the mosaics on the floor. The mosaics were cool illusions, shapes, and patters! They reminded us of our mosaic by our front door in our Utah home. Here are some pictures.

These were the first amazing mosaics that we saw on our cruise. They are even more cool when you think how long they would have taken to make. It takes Ashton 10-20 minutes to make a small mosaic with pre-cut stickers. They had to cut out each little tiny rock! Then they had to put them in place! Oh just to clarify, we didn't actually go into the church until the very end, but we did see it at the beginning.

The next cool thing that we saw was the port. My dad showed me that there were two fortresses on both sides of the port. That way when bad guys try to get in, they'd sink because of the two fortresses. While we were walking along the port we saw a fish market. There were tons of people selling fish. Some fish were still alive. I saw a little girl walk up to one of the venders, and a fish jerked really fast and splashed water all over her. That's when we saw this thing. I don't actually have a picture of the whole thing but I will show you what happens when you take a picture of part of the whole thing. Try and figure out how we took these pictures.
We took a family picture too. :)

After seeing that we went to buy tickets to go to where the Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned. It is the same place where Emilee got attacked by a seagull. Anyway, inside the castle was so cool. Even though I haven't read the book it was still awesome to see where he dug a hole. There were many other rooms. Some of which were cells. Ashton's favorite room in the castle was this big circular room that had speakers all around. They would play freaky sounds. I have no idea why they did that though.

The top level of the castle had an amazing view of the port and the ocean. After the castle we went and explored the rest of the island. We found a seagull nest and started to try and scare them. That ended up in Emilee getting attacked. As we walked around the island we noticed that there were chicken bones scattered on the ground. My dad told me that the seagulls would go steal chickens and eat them.

Should have paid more attention to this :)

When we got back to the mainland we got on a bus to go to the top of a hill to see church. It was crazy seeing the bus go up the narrow streets. When we got to the cathedral, we looked down the hill and saw the whole entire city. It was awesome. Then we went into the church. It was another basilica. Instead of the floor being mosaic the ceiling was a golden mosaic. On the walls were pictures of boats and hanging from the ceiling were a long line of model boats. At the back of the castle there was a cool dome. Here are some pictures.

Pretty much the whole ceiling was mosaic! You can see the model boats hanging from the top.

The floor was mosaic too, but I thought the ceiling was cooler.

After that we went back to the main city and explored on our way back to the boat.
