Week 18 - Cooking Class

Today Jacob and I went to a cooking class.  We go every first Tuesday of the month.  We go to the teen hangout place in Kehlen and cook a meal and practice French.

There was a new adult there that spoke enough English to help us understand.  She was very nice, and she made the cooking class more fun. She also helped us with our French.

For our appetizer  we made a cream-puff type thing with a creamy sauce inside.  I wish I knew the names of all the foods we cooked, but it is hard with the language barrier.

For our main course we made potato fries and veal.  Jake and I didn't know what veal was, so we asked.  They didn't know how to explain it in English, but they tried.  They said cow-goat-baby.  We were so confused.  We looked it up when we got home and it is a baby calf that is 1-3 months old.    We dipped the meat in flour, then eggs, and then something else that we couldn't figure out it was.  It was like a breaded grain type thing.  Very interesting. Then after we cooked it we put hard boiled egg crumbs on top.  It was very good.  The veal was a little tough though.

While we were waiting for the veal to cook the English helper (we don't know how to pronounce her name) sat and chatted with all of the kids.  She asked me and Jacob if we went to church.  We said yes, we go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  She told us that she heard about our church because she was a Christian.  She started talking about the Bible and asked us is we believe in the Bible.  We said yes, and that we also believe in the Book of Mormon.  She remembered that we were from Utah and it clicked in her head that we were Mormons.  She said, "Ah Utah- Book of Mormon- Mormons!"  Jacob's friend Juillian was very interested and kept asking us questions.  We talked about the Book of Mormon, the sacrament, baptism, missionaries.  When we were talking about baptism they got really confused because of the language barrier. We told them that we get baptized when we are 8 years old, and somehow they thought we got baptized every time we went to church.  We clarified, and it made sense to them.  When we started talking about missionaries, they thought that we were on a mission in Luxembourg.  We told them that we were not on a full time mission, and that our dad was working here.  We had a great conversation about the church, and we could of kept going but dinner was ready.  This was the first time Jacob and I shared the gospel by ourselves, and we were glad we had the opportunity.

For dessert we made cream puffs with ice cream and chocolate drizzled on top.  Very delicious!

This cooking class has been really fun.  We are able to practice our French.  Jacob was really surprised by how much he could understand. He just needs to practice speaking it.  I could understand very little.  I think it is harder for me because I am so dependent on reading lips.  I haven't learned how to read someones lips when they are speaking French. If I can't read someones lips I struggle to hear and understand.  I need to learn how to match up the sound of French to the words on their lips.  By being here in Luxembourg I have realized how much I depend on lip reading.
