Week 32 - Canoeing and Vianden

On Wednesday we went canoeing, but it was more like kayaking through rapids.  They put us in the river at the worst possible place ever!   As soon as we got in we went through big rapids.  So we struggled trying to figure out how to steer the kayak, while getting drenched in jeans and sweatshirts.  Not a good way to start.

We then figured it out, and were ready to face the rapids, but the rest of the river was calm.   We were told to always stay to the right when we come across an intersection.  But Spencer, Tori, and I decided to go left at one intersection.  For awhile the river was calm, and we wanted some rapids, and we were already soaked, so why not. So we steered our kayaks to the left, while mom, Jake, and Ashton went to the right.

As soon as we turned left, and it was too late to go back, we realized we were in for an adventure.  There were huge rapids, bigger than the ones at the beginning.  Spencer went through the rapids first, and survived, and he got soaked.  Next it was our turn, so we paddled fast and when we went off the first rapid, the nose of our kayak plunged into the water and disappeared.  There were about 4 rapids, so we got soaked, but we did it!  We met up with everybody else when the river joined again.

The water was very brown because of all of the rain that came through, but the scenery was gorgeous!  It was a very pretty area with green everywhere and flowers along the side. After kayaking for about 2 hours, we reached the end and ate lunch.

Mom and Ashton walked to a bus stop and were going to catch a bus while the rest of us got on mountain bikes and rode 12 km back to the start.  It was a nice flat bike ride back.  Spencer cliff jumped for a little bit, Tori and I picked blackberries, and we made our way back in little over an hour.

We were exhausted!  So after a short nap and dinner, Spencer, Jacob, Tori, and I rode the bus to the open air cinema to watch Jaws.  At the part when the dead man pops up in the sunken ship, Spencer purposely screams loudly and high, and scares the whole audience.  We were laughing so hard.  We had to leave the movie early to catch the bus. We didn't want to miss it, but we didn't want to run to the bus again.  So we left early to have plenty of time to catch the bus.

On Thursday we went to the medieval festival the the Vianden Castle.  We dropped Jacob off at the bishop's house to hang out with his son, Adam.  Jacob taught Adam how to get faster on his rubiks cube. It was really good for Jacob because he learned a lot of French.

The medieval festival takes place all throughout the castle.  We have already seen the castle many times so it was nice that the medieval festival was there also, so it wasn't boring.  Spencer paid 2 euros to have a big golden eagle sit on his arm.  We watched a falconry show, and really weird 3 musketeer show, a gun salut, and a flag show.  We ate lunch in the cellar of the castle.  We had yummy pasta and potatoes. This festival was more just people selling things, but it was still fun.  We all liked the other festival better, because it felt more medieval because it was set up like a medieval town.

After the festival we walked around the cute town.  We decided to use our Luxembourg card and go on a little train ride through the city, but first mom needed to move the car from up by the castle and down to the city because the parking time was up.  So she walked up the big hill to the car, and when she got the car she realized she left the keys in the backpack that she left with us.  So I met her halfway up the hill,  and gave her the keys.  We got gelato while we were waiting for mom.

We hopped on the little green train and rode through the town.  Mom was hoping that they would give a history tour, but they only said a couple of things.  After the train ride, we walked over to the ski lift and rode to the top.  It was a scary lift because it was very steep.  It was a very pretty view of the castle and town.

Then we went to the Victor Hugo museum.  The problem was that everything was written in Luxembourgish, so we couldn't understand anything.  But we did get that Hugo would come here for a writing retreat. The coolest thing, was that they had the original 1862 Les Miserables edition.

After the museum, we picked up Jacob and headed home.  It was a good day.  Tori and I were too tired to go to the open air cinema, but Spencer went and had a good time.  We stayed home and watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.  Ashton has been really enjoying watching the Harry Potter series, even though he has to close his eyes sometimes.
