Week 37 Summary - Bernkastel-kues fireworks!

Emilee blogged first about the week and Ben blogged second about the weekend...

On Monday it was Labor Day back in the states, so we didn't have school. We decided to go to the Grevenmacher and Remich area.  We went to the Butterfly Garden, an aquarium, miniature golfing, and a bike ride along the Moselle River.

We first went to the Butterfly Garden in Grevenmacher.  Ashton was in heaven!  It was a very beautiful room full of pretty plants, flowers, turtles, lizards, and butterflies. There were butterflies everywhere!  Some butterflies landed on us, especially mom because she had a hot pink shirt on.  When we were about to leave 2 butterflies landed on Ashton's arm, and he was so excited!  Ashton loved being surrounded by beautiful butterflies.

After the Butterfly Garden, we headed to an aquarium.  It was not the greatest.  Seriously.  There were two small rooms with small tanks.  They were like doctor office fish tanks. We were out of there in 10 minutes.

Next we headed to Remich for miniature golfing and a bike ride along the Moselle River. Mom dropped me, Spencer, Jacob, and Ashton at the miniature golfing and she headed to her doctor's appointment.  We did 2 rounds of miniature golfing, and Ashton did great!  After that we got delicious gelato.

While we were waiting for mom to come back we played at the park and by the river.  I told Ashton not to get close to the river because he could fall in.  Jacob and Ashton were throwing rocks into the river, and what do you know, Ashton slips and falls into the Moselle.  He sat in the water frozen, with a look of shock on his face.  He was soaked from the waist down.  We took his pants and shirt off, and he wore my cardigan and Jacob's jacket.  Mom was stuck in major traffic, but she finally made it back in time to go biking. We rented bikes and a trailer for Ashton.  It was a beautiful ride with the Moselle on one side, and grape vines on the other.  It was a busy day, and we were exhausted!

School is going good.  We can't wait until Ashton goes back to school, he is so loud.  Mom keeps him busy downstairs and at the park, but there are times when he is left with us.  It will be nice when he is at school.

The weekend summary...

This weekend has been pretty eventful because we started doing fun activities on Wednesday night!  Wednesay night Emilee, Jacob and I went to the Josy Barthel national stadium to watch the Luxembourg national team play Cologne Germany. They played to a 1:1 draw, but it was really fun to be there with the kids.  It was a super nice night. We had mettwurst and fanta.  Watching an international soccer game was on the bucket list so it was great to check that one off.

On Thursday we had an awesome ping pong tournament with the young men at mutual.  A couple of the boys were actually pretty decent ping pong players.  It is nice that the kids have some good
friends here.

On Friday I dropped Kim off at 1:00 pm for a sleep study at a local hospital.  She has restless leg syndrome, so they are trying to figure out the right medicine to help her sleep at night.  Based upon this picture, I wouldn't get any sleep.  She was super glad to get home at 10:00 am the next morning.

On Friday night, I took the kids over to a local family in the ward.  Their daughter Margo had her 13th birthday.  She invited the parents as well, so I got to have some treats and play futsal with the kids until about 10:30.  They have a super nice outdoor futsal court with lights and everything.  It was super fun.

Saturday afternoon we headed off to meet one of my old missionary companions, Steve Koch.  He's in the Army and stationed at Ramstein air force base in Kaiserslautern.  It was really, really fun to get to see him again.  He's doing well.  His daughter is on a mission in Taiwan and his 15-year old son is enjoying high school in Germany.  We are hoping to visit them again before we head home.

We met at a wine festival in Bernkastel-kues Germany.  It was about an hour from Kehlen along the Mosel river.  It was super fun to wander around the streets where we saw some really old 1400's houses.  There were tons of people, brass bands, brats, wine tasting booths, etc.  We all enjoyed tasting some Traubensaft, which is grape juice!  Because it was served in wine glasses the kids were all a little nervous!   I had some super yummy mushrooms, potatoes and brats.

The highlight of the night was the fireworks.  There was a castle high up on the banks of the Mosel.  The fireworks re-created a battle.  We were super close along the banks of the river, so it was body shocking impressive.

We've enjoyed talking with the grandparents on the phone today and have been planning our last few months here in Luxembourg.  It is going to be hard to fit in everything we still want to do before it is time to head home.

This week we're super excited to see the Aagards.  We're going to drive down and see the Eiger in Switzerland!
