Every day here has been full of ups and downs so it has felt like we are living on a roller coaster. This morning we decided that we wanted to live at The Barn in Kehlen so we called the realtor and told him we did not want the apartment in Limpertsberg. We felt that with the kids having to do school online they would be spending so much time at home so it would be best to live in a bigger, nicer place. We felt relieved to have finally made a decision. This relief did not last long. We found out this afternoon that we will be breaking a Luxembourg law if our kids do the online school. Luxembourg law requires that children be enrolled and attending school. The online school does not count. The woman we were talking to told us that the government will take away our children if they are not enrolled in school. Obviously we now have to figure out something else. Since the International Schools are full, our only option is to go back to Lycee Michel Lucius. Luckily the principal there is very understanding and is willing to work with us. He is checking to see if our kids would be allowed to attend their school and do the online school for part of their classes. If not, we will be stuck with attending Lycee Michel Lucius full time which is not a good thing for our kids. The curriculum does not line up with what they have been learning back home because the school is a year behind academically. Also, Emilee can't understand anything because the accents are so thick. So with our school plans changing, our plans to live at The Barn will have to change. BUMMER!!!! Not only is it a bummer that we can't live out there, we passed up the only option available in Limpertsberg! Now we will be starting over from scratch.
On a more positive note, Ashton is starting to like school a little more each day. Today was an especially fun day for him because I had signed up to do story time with the class in the afternoon. I read Ashton's favorite book, Tadpoles Promise. I would read a page and the teacher would translate into Luxembourgish. It was fun for me to be at the school. His teacher is an excellent teacher. There are 15 other kids in the class from all over the world. There are three girls in his class that speak English so he feels comfortable around them. In the other class there are two boys that know English so Ashton plays with them at recess. One of the boys knows four languages. His first language is Dutch and he also knows Luxembourgish, English and French. It is pretty amazing to meet a 5 year old that is fluent in four languages. Ashton's school schedule is a little weird. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I drop him off at school at 8:30 and then pick him up for lunch at 11:40. I take him back to school at 2:00 and then pick him up again at 4:00. (Parents that work have to hire a babysitting service to pick their kids up for the two hour lunch break.) On Tuesday and Thursday he only goes to school from 8:30 to 11:40.
Once we figure out how the kids will go to school and where we will live, I think that I will actually enjoy this adventure. I just hope we get things figured out soon because I am ready for this roller coaster ride to end.
